Item: Scale Automotive Model
The Canadian-American Challenge Cup, popularly known as CAN-AM, was a sports car racing series which featured two-seater open-top vehicles without engine displacement limitations. During the period from 1967 to 1971, Bruce McLaren’s machines dominated the competition with five consecutive championship titles. The McLaren M8A introduced in 1968 was the result of efforts to produce the most lightweight and aerodynamically-refined machine. The monocoque chassis featured a rear-mounted engine, giving the M8A almost the same layout as F1 race cars. Downforce was not dependent only on the rear wing, but was generated by the entire wedge-shaped body. Distinctive features of the car were its NACA air ducts and the the 40cm long air funnels on its 620hp 7-liter V8 engine. Denny Hulme and Bruce McLaren drove the car to three and one wins respectively during that season to take the championship.
